You can record trap checks, create traps and move traps without mobile signal. TrapScan saves the work on your phone and uploads it automatically when you have a working connection and are logged in. You can record checks as a guest, then log in later to upload them.

| Enter a Card ID instead of scanning | Yes |
| Record a trap check | Yes |
| Choose a species, status or lure | Yes, using options already saved on your phone |
| Create a trap | Yes, after scanning its card |
| Link a card to an existing trap | No |
| Move a trap | Yes |
| See what's waiting to upload | Yes |
| View trap details and history | Only information your phone has already loaded |
| Replace or unlink a card | No |
| Log in or out | No |
Pages that need live information, including Network, Projects and You, help articles, card ordering and project registration, are greyed out in the menu while you're offline. Searching for a trap by name also requires a connection. You can still enter a Card ID manually to open the check form without scanning a QR code.
Get your phone ready before going offline
The first time you use TrapScan on a phone, connect to the internet so it can download the app and the options used in the check form, including species, status and lures.
Open TrapScan while you have a connection. If a green and blue loading bar appears at the top, wait until it disappears. That indicates the download has finished and the app is ready for offline use.
Record checks and create traps
To record a check offline, scan the card, complete the check form and submit it as usual. TrapScan confirms that the check has been saved on your phone. You can also create or move traps offline; those actions are saved on the phone until they can upload. For iPhone storage precautions, see Before a trip.
When installing a new trap, you can create it as part of its first check. Scan the card's QR code and select Create a new trap beneath the catch options on the offline check form. This option appears only after a QR code scan, not when you enter the Card ID manually.
If you're logged in when you lose signal, you remain logged in. You'll need a connection to log in or out.
Upload your saved work
Once your phone is online again, TrapScan automatically uploads saved work if you're logged in. If you're logged out, it keeps the work on your phone and shows Log in to upload. Logging in starts the upload automatically.
Every record is credited to the account that is logged in when it uploads. This includes checks recorded by a guest and traps created offline. You don't need an account to create a trap offline or take any separate step to claim earlier work.
Check upload progress
An indicator below the header appears when the phone is offline or work is waiting to upload. Select it to open Offline mode, where you can see queued records and any that need attention.
| Indicator | What it means |
|---|---|
| Nothing shown | The phone is online with nothing waiting to upload |
| Working offline | There's no connection; new work is saved on the phone |
| Log in to upload | The connection has returned, but someone needs to log in |
| Back online | The connection has returned |
| Uploading records | Saved work is uploading |
| Upload failed | A record couldn't be uploaded |
| Done | Everything has uploaded |
Why uploads fail and what deleting affects
TrapScan automatically retries temporary connection problems. If a record still can't upload, open Offline mode to see its status. Some records have Try again; others have Delete when a problem needs to be resolved before uploading can continue.
Delete a record only if you're prepared to lose that saved work. Deleting removes it from the upload list and doesn't fix the original problem. If you delete a trap that was created offline, every check saved against that trap is also deleted. This can't be undone.
Some reasons a record may fail to upload include:
- The card is already linked to a trap.
- The person uploading doesn't have permission to move the trap.
- The trap has been deleted.
- The Card ID doesn't exist.
TrapScan uploads work in the order it was recorded because later actions may depend on earlier ones. For example, a check on a newly created trap must wait for the trap itself to upload. A record that can't be resolved can therefore hold up everything recorded after it; deleting that record allows the remaining work to continue.
Checks recorded on unlinked cards
You can record a check offline even when TrapScan can't tell whether its card is linked to a trap. When the check uploads, if the card is unlinked, TrapScan saves the check against its Card ID until someone links it. The check then belongs to the trap the card is linked to. Your other uploads continue while it waits.
Once the rest of your work has uploaded, an amber cards need linking message shows the Card IDs still awaiting a link. Copy or write down the IDs before dismissing the message, because dismissing it clears the reminder list. The saved checks remain in TrapScan.
If you're creating a new trap, you can return to its card, scan the QR code and select Create a new trap. You can also enter the Card ID on the Scan page to link a card without returning to it. Activating, replacing and unlinking cards explains these options.
If a card is unlinked after you record a check offline, the check isn't lost. If your phone already knew the trap, it uploads to that original trap. Otherwise, it follows the Card ID and is saved in TrapScan until the card is linked again. Neither case blocks your other uploads.
Looking after offline work
Before a trip
Saved work stays on your phone until it's uploaded or deleted. Closing TrapScan, restarting your phone or changing networks doesn't normally remove it, and TrapScan doesn't set an expiry for saved work. However, iOS has a storage restriction for people using TrapScan in Safari on an iPhone.
If you use TrapScan in iPhone Safari, iOS can delete its stored offline data after seven days without you opening TrapScan directly. Opening it again resets the seven-day period, even without a connection. Installing TrapScan on the Home Screen removes this limit. If checks may remain offline for several days, install it before leaving.
Shared phones
On a shared phone, saved work uploads under whichever account logs in. Make sure the correct person is logged in before the phone starts uploading.
